Mountain Bikers get TrashedCopyright www.mtnbikrider.com On Saturday the 21st of September 2002, between 30 and 40 local mountain bikers met with some members of GHORBA, the Greater Houston Off Road Bikers Association for a morning trash pickup along Buffalo Bayou in Terry Hershey Park. This was a joint project of the Harris County Flood Control, Harris County Parks Department and GHORBA. Drinks and Snacks were provided by HEB, West Side Bicycles and GHORBA. The bikers were hampered by the high water level of the bayou due to the release of recent rain at the reservoir. Still, the much miss-judged group collected around two thousand pounds of paper, plastic, cans and glass as well as several automobile tires and even a swing set. This is not a first time effort for the club as there are many trail work days spread among the few riding areas in the Houston area. Many of these same individuals were out in force to help plant trees in Terry Hershey Park back in June. The club organizes on average two work days per month and use techniques developed by the International Mountain Bike Association, IMBA creates, enhances and preserves trail opportunities for mountain bikers worldwide. Since 1988, IMBA has been bringing out the best in mountain biking by encouraging low-impact riding, volunteer trail work participation, cooperation among different trail user groups, and innovative trail management solutions.
