Bikeland Presents the 2008 GHORBA Big Ring Challenge

2008 BRC Race Flier

The 2008 GHORBA Big Ring Challenge, presented by our title sponsor, Bikeland will take place on May 3rd and 4th.

BRC pre-registration

This is the lucky 7th Race of the 2008 Texas Cross Country State Mountain Bike Series and the 7th time GHORBA is hosting the race.

The race takes place in the beautiful Sam Houston National Forest, at the Double Lake Recreational Area. Here are the directions to Double Lake

As you might be aware, GHORBA is a 501.3c non-profit Trail Advocacy group (among other things) and all the money we gather goes back to building a strong mountain biking

…one of the best beginner courses in the State and certainly as part of the TMBRA race series.

Double Lake has the distinct advantage of being the only course in the area which has excellent soil and drainage …You can literally ride a day or even hours after it has rained without fear of damaging the course.

Call for Volunteers

Volunteers are needed to help for course and parking marshall duties, leg marking, start/finish area building and takedown. Get free camping, food, schwag and a good feeling that you helped with this great event. If you want to and can help, email Chris Brown

  1. Some answers to FAQs.

the course is fairly easy single-track – there are no technical features like jumps or obstacles. But it is nice singletrack and if you race, it actually can be harder than “technical” courses because there is no let-up from pedaling! If its your first race, just pedal as hard as you find comfortable.

    - there is a Beginner Racer’s clinic Saturdays at 1pm before every TMBRA race, now given by Alan and Kathy Jackson. This is not a skills clinic, it is a short course to give you the basics of racing rules and etiquette.

    - I don’t think we have any skills clinics scheduled before the BRC, but then, this course does not demand any high degree of skill. However, I do recommend you go and pre-ride the course before the race, just to get a feel for it. In any case, it doesn’t matter if you are Beginner or Expert, you only go as fast as your skills will allow, even the Experts get off and walk sometimes!

    - GHORBA are holding trail work parties at Double Lake on 19 & 20 April, and there will no doubt be lots of riding to be done afterwards. This will be a good opportunity to meet experienced riders and see what bikes they are riding – don’t be afraid to ask for help or guidance.

  4. Despite the little bit of rain, the race is still on, and the course will be in even better shape with a little bit of hardpacking.

Hello Houstonians. Please check out Google traffic before heading straight up 59. There is major backups and construction going on before and around Splendora. Alternate routes would be up 45, take a right on 1097 in Willis. Go right at hwy 150. Turn Right on 2025, Double Lake is on Left about 1/4 mile.
