Trails

Stephen F Austin State Park

This is a relatively new trail just west of Katy.

All of the trails are complete including the walking trail with numerous 30 foot bridges. That trail needs to have about 50 more tons of concrete surface material placed on it in various sections to finish it up.

Signage and trails markings are our next project. Kelly has already placed a number of posts for the bike loop signs he is making.

The trails composing the MTB loop are not marked so it’s easy to miss a turn and cut significant sections of trail off the loop. A lot of of the trails at SFA are covered with leaves and it makes seeing them difficult due to the lack of traffic on sections of the MTB loop. We still consider the trails to be new since they haven’t been ridden enough to burn in good lines for bikes.

SFA is pretty flat, but does have a little bit a elevation change as you move towards the river. It is not technically difficult to ride, beginners love it, but there’s a couple big sections of singletrack that are incredibly challenging to try to go fast on due to bumps and tight, off camber turns. The sections where we tied into the existing hiking trail network are packed clay so you can really haul. The loop is about 5 miles long.

Riders should ask the rangers about the trails and trailheads when they stop to pay their day use fee. The printed park maps only show parts of the trails that are most used by hikers.
