Anthills - Great News
Following a series of meetings with Harris County Precinct 3, we are very pleased to report that we are now on track to make the Anthills an official trail system as part of Terry Hershey Park.
We recently received an invitation from REI to apply for a $10,000 Community Grant and the board quickly decided that we should apply and use the grant for improvements to the Anthills trails. Last month we met with Precinct 3 and made a presentation about our vision to make the Anthills an official part of the Terry Hershey Park Trail system and how we would use the grant money to provide materials, tools and training to make it one of the best natural surface trail systems in our region. We received a positive response from Precinct 3 and we are therefore moving forward with the plans to work on the trail between Eldridge and Wilcrest.
This is a huge development for us. It is probably the biggest thing to happen to GHORBA since we were founded in 1999 to save the trails at Memorial Park. This success has been made possible by the work of all of our leaders and members over the last 10 years as we have successively created official trails in other parks in our area; the timing was right for us to finally bring in the Anthills.
But this will also be a big challenge and there’s a lot of work ahead. We have now re-opened the Anthills forum on GHORBA.org – so please go there for Q&A – we’ll provide more details and we know that you’ll probably have a lot of questions.
We are optimistic that the REI Grant application will be successful and we hope to have good news on the outcome by the end of June. Meanwhile, the work will start. The majority of our members call Anthills their home trail. It’s quickly going to develop the biggest support group of all our trails and we know that you all will turn out and help us to realize its full potential.
Please join us in thanking Precinct 3 for supporting this project and for the decisive and prompt response following our meetings. We know they recognize that Anthills will be a major asset for Terry Hershey Park and for the region.
We’d also like to thank Chris Holmes, owner of Bicycle World of Houston, who used his friendship with P3 staff to help enable the meetings. Chris has offered to make his staff and shop available for helping with the coming effort – so please run by Bicycle World and thank him personally.
