Northwest Cycling Club Approves Grant for Huntsville Trail Expansion

We are pleased, humbled and excited to announce that Northwest Cycling Club recently approved their 2010 Budget, which includes a $20,000 grant to GHORBA to provide matching funds towards our next big project — expansion of the trails at Huntsville State Park (HSP).

NWCC have been very successful in fund raising through their sponsored rides and they approched GHORBA asking for ideas we might have for grants. Well, that was easy: “Huntsville”, we said. NWCC have supported GHORBA in the past with grants, but this time, we have kicked it up several notches. This grant will provide matching funds to be used to support another Texas Parks & Wildlife Recreational Trail Program (TPW/RTP) grant, similar to the one we were awarded last year

We’ve been laying ground work for this project for over a year. The planned expansion is part of the MTB Trail Master Plan for the Sam Houston National Forest (SHNF) that we prepared last year working jointly with IMBA. We’ve also been discussing it with TPW and the Forest Service. The planned trail will be an 8 – 10 mile loop built on Compartment 57 of the SHNF. Compartment 57 is land that neatly dovetails into HSP, between the park and I-45, with elevation changes of 150’. It’s going to be one sweet trail.

Timing on this should follow on nicely from the Double Lake project, which is now on track to commence construction this Spring. We’ll be putting in the TPW/RTP grant application in May.

Please join with us in thanking NWCC for their generous grant, which really is a testament to both our clubs great success over the years. If you see a “Northwesty” out on the bike, tell them “Thank You” personally – you can’t miss them, they’re the ones in the Purple and Yellow jerseys.

Kind regards,

Kevin Highfield
